A C.H. Local Media review of 50 enterprise SEO, AEO, and GEO job postings from companies including Apple, Microsoft, Stripe, Amazon, and JPMorgan Chase, pulled during the week of September 7 through 12, 2026, found that 96 percent treat AI search as an extension of SEO rather than a replacement for it. Zero of the 50 postings treated SEO knowledge as obsolete.
Every few months, someone on LinkedIn announces that SEO is dead. Then someone else replies that no, actually, GEO killed it. Then a third person shows up to explain that neither of them understands AEO, and the whole thread dissolves into acronym soup.
None of these people are wrong exactly. They are just arguing about the wrong thing.
For anyone who needs the shorthand: SEO, search engine optimization, is the practice of improving a website’s visibility in traditional search results like Google and Bing. AEO, answer engine optimization, is the practice of getting a business’s information surfaced as a direct answer, whether in a featured snippet, a voice search response, or an AI generated summary. GEO, generative engine optimization, is the practice of getting a business cited or recommended inside AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. All three are increasingly treated as parts of one discipline rather than three separate ones, which is exactly what this data shows.
There is a much better source of truth sitting in plain sight, and it costs nothing to check: the actual job postings from the actual companies spending actual money to solve this problem. Not opinions. Not predictions. Payroll.
So that is what I did. I pulled a sample of 50 current enterprise SEO, GEO, AEO and AI search postings from recognizable companies, banks, retailers, SaaS platforms and media brands, and I read every single one closely enough to categorize what the company is actually asking the hire to do.
The result is not close.

Forty eight of 50 roles, 96 percent, treat AI search as an extension of organic search rather than a replacement for it.
Zero treat SEO knowledge as obsolete.
That is not a trend. That is a consensus. And it came from companies like Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Adobe, Stripe, JPMorgan Chase, Home Depot, Stanley Black & Decker, ServiceNow, Palo Alto Networks and dozens more, not from a marketing agency with a stake in the outcome.

What the Requirements Actually Say
Titles are easy to spin. Requirements are harder to fake. Here is what these companies are actually asking candidates to already know before they will even consider them.
Apple’s SEO Program Manager posting asks for keyword research, content architecture, metadata, internal linking, semantic optimization and entity optimization, applied across traditional search and answer engines like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. The minimum requirement is eight years of hands on SEO experience.
Apple is not replacing its SEO person with a GEO person. Apple is telling its SEO person to also understand AI search.
Microsoft’s Senior SEO and AI Search Lead wants six or more years of hands on enterprise level SEO, plus a strong technical foundation in crawlability, indexation, canonicalization, robots directives, redirects, structured data and JavaScript rendering. Then it layers on AI citations, answer ready content and LLM readable experiences. The posting explicitly frames the goal as owning organic discovery across both traditional and AI powered search.
Stripe’s Head of AEO and SEO requires five or more years of experience building and executing SEO strategy before AEO or GEO experience even enters the conversation. Stripe’s own description calls organic search one of its largest and most efficient growth channels, and describes AI answer engines as a generational shift in software discovery. One person owns both.
Stanley Black and Decker wants XML sitemaps, robots.txt, hreflang, structured data, product schema, FAQ schema, HowTo schema, crawl management and log file analysis, then adds AEO on top of that foundation.
Adobe’s SEO Manager needs seven or more years of SEO experience before GEO and LLM search responsibilities are added.
Vanguard may be the cleanest example of all. Its posting is literally titled LLM SEO Optimization Specialist, and the required experience list includes technical SEO, schema, entities, topical authority, prompt led content strategy and LLM focused SEO in the same paragraph. Vanguard is not treating these as four separate disciplines. It is treating them as one discipline with more surfaces.
That pattern repeats across the sample almost without exception. The prerequisite for the AI search job is SEO experience.
The Work Itself Did Not Get Replaced. It Got Bigger.
Once you stop reading titles and start reading responsibilities, the supposed line between SEO and GEO gets even blurrier.
Technical SEO is still the foundation
Crawlability, indexing, canonicalization, redirects, JavaScript rendering, Core Web Vitals, site architecture, internal linking and structured data show up constantly, Microsoft’s posting being one of the clearest examples. Companies are not walking away from this work. They are asking the same people to extend it into a new retrieval environment.
Content SEO did not disappear either
Keyword research, search intent, topic mapping, content gaps, topical authority and content architecture remain core requirements. Apple’s posting asks for exactly this skill set, then extends it to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
Schema and structured data got more important, not less
Microsoft wants schema and JSON-LD. Stanley Black and Decker wants product schema, FAQ schema and HowTo schema. Adobe’s GEO role requires technical SEO knowledge covering crawlability, semantic HTML and structured data. A large share of what companies now call GEO work rests directly on infrastructure SEOs have already spent years building.
AI visibility measurement is the genuinely new piece
This is where something real changed. Companies now track AI citations, brand mentions inside generated answers, prompt share of voice, recommendation frequency and presence across model outputs. Microsoft wants a source of truth for AI citations and answer presence. Texas Instruments is building entirely new AI visibility KPIs because traditional search metrics cannot capture this. That part is not recycled SEO. That part is new.
Prompt analysis is becoming the AI equivalent of keyword research
Instead of only asking what customers type into Google, teams are now asking what people ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, and which brands show up in the answer. Experian calls for exactly this. VML’s GEO role builds and expands prompt sets as an ongoing process. The methodology is new. The underlying loop, research, gaps, optimization, measurement, is not.
Off site authority moved from nice to have to central
This might be the most important shift for anyone doing this work day to day. Adobe’s GEO role explicitly names backlinks, digital PR, brand mentions, Reddit, YouTube, forums, Wikipedia, G2, Capterra and TrustRadius as signals that influence both search rankings and AI generated answers. Semrush’s posting describes almost the identical concept. Authority built away from a company’s own website is now treated as a direct input into whether an AI system decides to mention that company at all.
The stated goal shifted from rankings to discoverability
Microsoft calls it organic discovery. Apple frames it as discovery across traditional and AI powered search. Victoria’s Secret calls the function AI and Organic Search. Plante Moran’s title is Search Optimization Strategist, covering visibility across both traditional and AI powered discovery. Nobody is being asked to chase a blue link anymore. They are being asked to be findable, period, regardless of which interface someone used to look.
The two exceptions worth taking seriously
A clean story is a suspicious story, so here is the counter evidence.
SailPoint’s AEO and GEO Manager posting actually says the role will own residual SEO, meaning traditional SEO becomes the supporting program while AEO and GEO become the primary focus. That is the strongest example in the sample of a company treating AI search as the senior discipline.
Even so, the same posting requires five or more years of SEO, digital marketing or content strategy experience, along with a technical foundation in structured data, log analysis and crawler directives. The organizational structure changed. The prerequisite skill set did not.
Citizens describes its shift as moving the search practice from traffic driven SEO to AEO, with an emphasis on visibility, authority and trust across answer engines. That is a legitimate philosophical change in what success is measured against. It is not a claim that search optimization skill becomes irrelevant.
Two roles out of fifty lean this direction. Both still require deep SEO grounding. That is not nothing, and it deserves to be named honestly rather than buried to keep the argument tidy.
What is actually happening, in one sentence
SEO did not die and GEO did not kill it. SEO turned into the foundation for a larger discipline that now includes AI visibility, entity optimization, prompt research, off site authority and answer engine presence, and the companies spending the most money on this problem are hiring the same experienced SEOs to run all of it.
That is a considerably less dramatic sentence than “SEO is dead.” It is also the sentence backed by 50 real job postings from companies actually writing checks, rather than a hot take built for engagement.
Why this matters more than another opinion
Anyone can argue about what to call this discipline. Anyone can post a hot take about SEO being over, or GEO being a fad, or AEO being marketing repackaged. That argument has already been made ten thousand times and it will keep being made because nobody involved has to prove anything.
Job requirements are different. A company writing a six figure job description is not trying to win an argument on LinkedIn. It is trying to solve a real problem with real money, and it will describe exactly what it actually needs, because getting the hire wrong is expensive.
That is why this data matters more than another framework or another prediction post. It is not somebody’s theory about where search is going. It is fifty companies showing their work.
Common questions
Is SEO dead in 2026?
No, and this is one of the rare answers to that question backed by primary data instead of an opinion. A review of 50 current enterprise job postings, pulled the week of September 7 through 12, 2026, found that zero treated SEO knowledge as obsolete, and 96 percent combined SEO directly with AI search rather than replacing one with the other. Companies spending real payroll on this problem answered the question before anyone had to ask it.
What is the difference between SEO, AEO, and GEO?
SEO improves a website’s visibility in traditional search results like Google and Bing. AEO gets a business’s information surfaced as a direct answer, in a featured snippet, a voice response, or an AI generated summary. GEO gets a business cited or recommended inside AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Most explanations stop at that definition. What the job posting data adds is proof of how companies actually organize the work in practice: 82 percent of the roles reviewed fold all three into a single position rather than splitting them into separate disciplines.
Do companies still need SEO if they are already investing in AI search optimization?
Yes, and the job requirements make the case better than any argument could. Among the 50 companies reviewed, including Apple, Microsoft, and Stripe, every AI search role required prior hands on SEO experience as a baseline qualification, ranging from five to eight years depending on the company. None treated AI search skill as a substitute for SEO experience. The postings themselves settle the question.
Is SEO worth it for a small business in 2026, or is that just an enterprise problem?
It is worth it at any size, because the underlying customer behavior is identical. A homeowner asking ChatGPT for a plumber and a Fortune 500 company being cited in an AI Overview are being evaluated by the same kind of signal: website content, reviews, and consistent information across the web. Enterprise companies simply have the budget to study this at scale. Small businesses face the identical shift with a smaller margin for error, since one missed answer surface can be the only chance a nearby customer gives them.
How has AI actually changed SEO, rather than replaced it?
It added a new surface without removing the old one. Job descriptions from Microsoft, Adobe, and Stanley Black & Decker all pair traditional technical SEO work, things like crawlability, schema, and site structure, with a newer layer focused on AI citation tracking, prompt analysis, and off site authority. The skill set expanded. It did not get replaced with a different one.
What should a business actually do differently because of this shift?
Fix the technical and content foundation first, since that work still underlies both traditional and AI search. Then build the newer layer on top of it: content that answers real customer questions directly, and visible proof outside the company’s own website, including reviews and mentions, that AI systems can use to decide whether the business is a trustworthy answer. Skipping straight to the newer layer without the foundation is the mistake the data shows even the largest companies refusing to make.
Maybe the people declaring SEO dead should read the job descriptions written by the companies actually spending money on the future of search.
